Sometimes it all seems simple to problem solve when a friend or a colleague comes to you for advice. They may tell you a story about how someone has upset them and they may not know if what they are perceiving is genuinely there, you may be told that someone has a very important dilemma that they have been ruminating over, whether of the romantic nature or the professional nature, or it could simply be lifestyle related - what to wear, how to workout, where to go or what to eat. Either way it goes, as a friend or a trusted source you actively listen to the person, consider the options carefully and provide an honest assessment on what needs to be done. Seems easy enough, right? Well, why then is it the soundness of these decisions rarely get applied when one is seeking to take actions within their own life? Speaking from my own personal experience, I feel like I have always been the "go-to guy" for many of my friends when they need advice. (In fact, it was this skill that led me down the road of going back to graduate school to study psychotherapy.) Even still, I think I often end up making the same bonehead mistakes that advise my friends and acquaintances not to make. We often hear individuals use the popular phrase "well, nobody's perfect" as a convenient cop out to these errors but that almost is counterproductive. In my opinion, that is like telling someone who trips and falls not to worry about their broken nose because a lot of other people in the world have tripped and fallen too. This weekend I made one of those bonehead mistakes and I'm here to say that my proverbial "nose" still has to heal and I could really care less if someone else has made the same mistake. I simply just have to do better. I am standing up and deciding to take action. I urge you all to want to do better in your lives and I feel that I would be entirely hypocritical if I didn't take action in my own...I've sat around all week moping so I figure it's time to go and be the change that I am trying to see. I won't speak on it further because hey, I've got work to do....We are all masterpieces in progress so lets keep painting!
